Urban HDD for NBN Infrastructure
The Challenge
Eco Drilling was engaged to support the rollout of NBN infrastructure in a densely populated urban corridor Australia wide. The project required horizontal directional drilling beneath existing streetscapes, including footpaths, signage, trees and driveways—without disturbing the surface. Adding complexity, we had to navigate around multiple live underground services such as water, sewer, gas and power. Precision, control and surface protection were paramount in a zero-disruption environment.
Our Solution
Using large to compact HDD rigs and guided tracking systems, we executed a trenchless bore path beneath the active urban surface. Our team worked closely with utility locators and local authorities to scan and confirm clearance around in-ground services. Adjustments were made in real time to accommodate site-specific tolerances, and our reinstatement crews ensured surfaces were restored to pre-work condition immediately after installation.
The Result
The project was completed safely, on time and without disruption to traffic, utilities, or surrounding assets. Eco Drilling’s ability to perform HDD in confined and congested urban conditions reinforced our reputation as a reliable NBN delivery partner. Our zero-defect installation was approved without correction and follow-on packages were awarded based on our performance.
